Kenya Staffer Can Now Toot His Own Horn

The first summer outreach team has made it to Kenya! One of the staff prayers for the teams is always for the Lord to allow the team to arrive safely with all their bags. The airlines allow you to check two 50 lb. bags for free when traveling internationally. In addition to a suitcase of personal items, we ask our team members to bring a second bag of provisions for the Open Arms Village. Often the provisions are critical, like supplies for our medical camps. We have had the airlines lose or misplace important items in the past, thus the prayers.
This year we had a special additional package to check for one of our Kenya staff. This meant one of the team members had a third checked item. Because of the two free bag limit, when they reached the ticket counter, the agent wanted an additional $200. After explaining the nature of the trip and the reason for the third check-in, the agent graciously waived the excess baggage charge thus saving us the additional $200. Praise the Lord for His provision!
One of the highlights of arrival day for the team was delivering this special package to Meshak, the head welfare officer (security guard) at Open Arms Village. Meshak, you see, plays the trombone and has been without an instrument for ten years. Friends of Open Arms heard about his longing to play again and generously sent this special package, a trombone.
You should have seen Meshak’s expression when he opened the box and saw its contents. The village children crowded around him as he assembled his new horn. There wasn’t a dry eye in the crowd as he played his first song, “Amazing Grace”.
