What to pack
28th April, 2010 - Posted by Nancy Winn -
Next week I will travel to Eldoret, Kenya with Rachel and Belle. I am eager to see my friends at the Open Arms office and everyone at the village. May 5th sounded like it was far away and now it is upon me. We use our airline luggage allowance to move supplies from the US to Kenya. My two checked bags will be filled with items needed by the children and our Kenya staff. I will also be taking some things for my daughter, Jessica, who is serving with the Peace Corps in Rwanda. I will be efficiently getting all my personal stuff into my carry-on bag and a day pack.
And so I come to the point of my weekly reflection. My stuff. What is it that I really need to have for 3 weeks of travel? How many changes of clothes do I take to a place where so many people feel fortunate to have clothes at all? What treats do I take to a place where so many go hungry each day? This will be my second trip to Kenya and my personal goal is to gain a better understanding of the hopes, fears, and daily reality of the people I get to meet and work with. I know I can not ever truly walk in their shoes but I want to learn as much as I can. I know they have much to teach me. So, I think I will pack simply and give myself space to experience as much as I can of Kenya.
Next week I will give you on update on my trip. Until then, kwaheri.
