A Mission of Hope - Part 1
8th September, 2009 - Posted by Camille Cotton -
We are thrilled with the news series that KPTV FOX 12 news is running about Open Arms this week! Last night was Part 1 of this four-part series, and they documented our work in the slums of Kambi Teso. Our second outreach team of the summer was running medical, dental and eye clinics in Eldoret, Kenya, while KPTV was there. It was eye-opening to see the conditions in which people live in the slums. For the majority of them, the only thing they own is the tattered clothes on their back. As team leader Tara Lepp said, “That’s the poorest of the poor. That’s the ultimate poverty.”
The good news is that volunteers from Portland, the UK, and around the world are joining together to serve the Kenyans with Open Arms and provide relief and hope. Hundreds of people have received medical, dental and eye care this summer through outreach teams, and hundreds more have been screened for HIV/AIDS and given treatment. The children of the Kambi Teso slum also receive four meals each week from Open Arms, the only food many of these children will eat all week.
In Part 2 of the series, we will meet the street children who live in the dumps of Eldoret. Tune in to watch during the 10:00 pm news on KPTV FOX 12 Oregon.
